Dental professionals are exposed to noise-producing equipment during their work, and there is evidence suggesting that this occupational exposure to noise places them at a higher risk of developing hearing loss (noise-induced hearing loss). A literature review identified 28 scientific publications that investigated noise-induced hearing loss among dental professionals.

In 23 studies, objective parameters for noise-induced hearing loss were used; 3 studies used subjective parameters, and 2 studies used both objective and subjective parameters. Of the 12 studies with objective measurements that also included a control group, 8 reported significantly greater hearing loss among dental professionals compared to the control groups.

Of the 13 studies with objective measurements but without a control group, 7 reported significant hearing loss among dental professionals. All 5 studies using subjective measurements reported significant hearing loss among dental professionals.

These results suggest that hearing loss appears to occur more frequently among dental professionals than in most control groups.
